Like many families, the first couple of weeks of this month involves an adjustment as we settle the kids into school. For others, September still ushers in changes and we know that the Fall is soon to come.
My response to September is to look at it like another kind of New Year. I make a conscious decision to make some healthy changes.
Here are my top 5 suggestions for things that can positively impact your health and well being this September.
1. Make time for the Sun!
20 minutes of Sunshine is still possible before and after work whenever possible, so grab your chance to sit for a few minutes on a patio, balcony or in the park. If you can, fit in some stretches or a relaxed walk. I choose to do a meditation stretch or walk sometimes as part of that 20 minutes. I tend to have a very busy mind - so imagining that I am stretching or walking out negative or stressful thoughts helps! If you have a tough time fitting something like this in before or after work, then try for a quick lunch time escape.
2. Try something new!
Take up Rock climbing, dance lessons, photography, writing or attending poetry readings. We are never to old to revisit a skill or interest from our Youth. Seize the Day!
3. Spend quality time with Friends/Family!
If you are finding that the Family and/or friendships are feeling a bit disconnected, make a point to implement a new togetherness activity - like a game night or even a monthly outdoor excursion. Seize the Day! Time goes by quickly and time together should be honoured and cherished, but it takes work to fit these things in.
4. Try making even one or two healthy eating choices!
People often get stressed out when considering making changes to their diet. They think it will be difficult or expensive. But if you look at it as simply adding a couple of good things rather than depriving yourself, you change your way of thinking and therefore change your way of feeling about it. Like drinking more water and adding more dinners with protein and vegetables instead of too many late in the day Carbs. That's pretty easy. Keep a bottle of water with you, for on the go and at work. You'll find yourself drinking it. Chicken, fish or even Steak with a nice salad or vegetables steamed or stir-fried in Extra Virgin Olive Oil can be very satisfying. Trying out your hand at cooking or baking some healthier recipes can also be surprisingly fun and rewarding.
5. Go for a Massage!
Try implementing a regular schedule of self-care. Of course I would highly recommend a monthly Massage if you are able. Perhaps going to the Chiropractor and for a Massage once a month to every 6 weeks even. These treatments can work very well together, maintaining balance in the Musculoskeletal system, helping to repair repetitive strain tension and injury and for overall preventative care. Whatever helps to keep you in tip top shape!
In conclusion, taking even one of these suggestions can make a world of difference in your life. So cheers to you! May your September and Fall be Healthy and new!
